Volunteer role title: Volunteer Gardener and Support Worker

Purpose of role
Volunteering will take place at Roots & Shoots, our horticultural project in Rochford. Roots and Shoots is home to our gardening project, which offers training and practical experience to develop confidence, creativity and life skills for adults with learning disabilities and people with autism. This also gives the individuals we work with the chance to make friends and have fun with each other.

In this role, you would be helping and supporting adults with learning disabilities and people with autism, assisting with gardening duties. This could include:

•           Helping to maintain the grounds and allotments on our 5.5-acre horticultural project

•           Assisting to grow vegetables from seed and to plant out into allotments

•           Helping the people we support to gain work related skills

•           General garden maintenance, including weeding & mowing

•           Conservation work within woodland area i.e., hedging

•           Maintaining the sensory garden

•           Repair, renewal and maintenance of allotment areas, including growing frames

•           Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation i.e., Health & Safety and Equal Opportunities

 

Attributes/skills needed
You do not need to be an expert gardener, just have some general gardening knowledge and an interest in supporting autistic adults and people with learning disabilities.

 

Other related activities may include:
Volunteers are expected to attend face to face induction training and online learning and any other training that is considered to be relevant to the role.

 

Requirements

           Completed Volunteer Application Form (not required at this stage)
           Enhanced DBS (completed and paid for by Hamelin)
