Hamelin has launched free advice and guidance sessions for autistic adults and people with learning disabilities in Castle Point who are looking to get into work.
The charity’s Ability Works project provides practical employment support, including CV writing, talking through gaps in employment, building confidence, exploring different work and volunteering options, and offering general advice about jobs and careers.
Following the success of existing sessions in Rochford and Chelmsford, Hamelin is expanding the service to include a free weekly drop-in at Canvey Island JobCentre Plus, 140 Furtherwick Road. The sessions will take place every Wednesday from 10am to 12.30pm, giving people the opportunity to access support without the need for an appointment.
To be eligible, attendees must live in Castle Point and identify as autistic or as having a learning disability, although no formal diagnosis is required.
Employment Manager Markie Musilova said the expansion was an important step in reaching more people who face barriers to employment.
She said: “Statistics show autistic adults and people with learning disabilities are hugely underrepresented in the workplace, despite the vast majority having both the desire and ability to work. They are often not given the opportunities they deserve, which is why Hamelin is offering the free service to help people build the confidence and skills they need to succeed in employment.
“We want to show employers that autistic people and those with learning disabilities can bring significant value to their businesses, and challenge outdated misconceptions.”
