Hamelin is celebrating a major milestone after two people it supports have become the first to complete an ASDAN qualification at the charity.
Ben and Matt have successfully passed the ASDAN Careers and Experiencing Work Short Course, marking the first completed courses delivered at Hamelin since it became an accredited ASDAN centre. Their achievement represents an important step forward in creating meaningful learning and progression opportunities for autistic adults and people with learning disabilities.
Hamelin became an accredited ASDAN member in September last year, opening the door to nationally recognised qualifications designed to support independence, confidence and employability. ASDAN is an education charity and awarding organisation that provides courses and qualifications focused on skills for life and work. These range from personal, social, health and economic education to practical life skills and vocational tasters in areas such as computing and art.
Following the success of Ben and Matt, more people at Hamelin are now working towards ASDAN qualifications across a range of subject areas. Current courses include Computing, Careers and the World of Work, Environmental and Horticulture, Catering, and Volunteering. The courses are available from Key Stage 2 through to Level 3 and are tailored to help individuals build skills that align with their interests, ambitions and personal goals.
Sue Wray, Hamelin’s Head of Community, said the completion of the first courses was a proud moment for everyone involved.
She said: “Seeing Ben and Matt complete their course is a fantastic achievement and a real celebration of what is possible. ASDAN qualifications allow the people we support to gain recognised accreditation while developing practical skills that matter to them.
“Becoming an ASDAN centre is a key part of our vision to create opportunities and empower individuals to thrive. These first completions show the positive impact this accreditation is already having.”
Hamelin’s ASDAN accreditation was made possible through generous funding from KBH Haus, whose support enabled the charity to expand its learning and development pathways.
With more people now undertaking courses, Hamelin looks forward to supporting many more individuals to grow in confidence, gain qualifications that reflect their talents and achievements, and take positive steps towards greater independence and meaningful employment.
