Accessible adventures on the water

Boat trips web

People supported by Hamelin recently had the opportunity to experience something a little different, getting out on the water around Mersea Island with Freedom Boat Adventures.

Over a number of trips, people enjoyed time on the water aboard Freedom Boat Adventures' purpose-built accessible boat, taking in the views, spending time together and enjoying the freedom of being out on the water.

The opportunity was made possible thanks to funding from Colchester Catalyst, helping us create an experience that might otherwise have been out of reach for some of the people we support. It also showed what can be achieved when local organisations and funders work together to create more inclusive opportunities for disabled people.

Freedom Boat Adventures' boat has been specifically designed to make getting out on the water more accessible, with features that help people with a range of mobility needs enjoy the experience.

For the people we support, this meant being able to enjoy a boat trip in a way that was comfortable, accessible and, most importantly, fun.

For many of those who took part, the trips were about much more than simply getting out on a boat. They were an opportunity to try something new, enjoy time with friends, family and staff, and experience the local area from a completely different perspective.

Sue Way, Head of Community at Hamelin, said: “We know that creating meaningful opportunities often starts with working together. This project is a great example of how a charity, local organisation and funders can come together to make experiences more accessible and inclusive.

“We're delighted that so many people were able to take part and create some fantastic memories along the way.

“A huge thank you to Colchester Catalyst for funding the opportunity and to Freedom Boat Adventures for working with us to make the trips possible. We'd also like to thank all the staff, volunteers and supporters who helped make them such a success.”

Paul Button, Director at Freedom Boat Adventures, said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome the people supported by Hamelin on board and see the smiles, excitement and sense of freedom that being out on the water brought.

“At Freedom Boat Adventures, we believe everyone should have the chance to enjoy the water, and we’re proud to have played a part in making these experiences possible. A huge thank you to Hamelin and Colchester Catalyst for helping make it happen and here’s to making more memories together in 2027.”
