Members of Hamelin visited Basildon Hospital Radio to step into the world of broadcasting and explore the inner workings of a real radio station.
The visit was arranged so two of the people Hamelin supports, Lee and Barry, who both have a keen interest in IT and music, could see first-hand how the equipment functions and even try it out for themselves.
The pair and members of the Hamelin support team and a volunteer were given a comprehensive tour of the station and invited to take part in a one-hour programme. This special segment provided an opportunity for the group to talk about the incredible work that Hamelin does in supporting autistic adults and people with learning disabilities and how people can get involved with the charity through volunteering and fundraising.
Lee and Barry enthusiastically shared their personal experiences, discussing what they enjoy most about being part of Hamelin and the positive impact it has on their lives. The group also selected a variety of songs to be played for listeners to enjoy including hits from Billy Joel, One Republic, and Fleetwood Mac.
Lee said: “It was a great day. I really enjoyed having a go with the equipment and play some songs, I felt like a real DJ!”
Jade Rees, Hamelin support worker who arranged the visit, said it was a fantastic and insightful opportunity.
She said: “The visit was designed so some of our people could explore their interests in a real-life setting. It not only provided valuable insights into broadcasting but also highlighted the importance of community involvement and accessibility in the media industry. Hamelin continues to champion opportunities that empower the people we support and broaden their experiences in line with their interests and life-goals.”
Basildon Hospital Radio broadcasts 24 hours a day throughout the year providing entertainment, information and news free of charge to the patients of the hospital.
Jacqui James, Basildon Hospital Radio Chair, said it was a pleasure to welcome the group to the station and hear about the good work Hamelin does in the community.
She said: “I enjoyed learning more about the support Hamelin offers to disabled people in the community enabling them to live happier and more independent lives.
“The visit was a great success all round with Barry and Lee finding out how the radio station operated and eager to learn more."
